On Masks (1) 06 May 2020

With very few exceptions, I do not plan going anywhere where masks are required or where mask shaming of the mask-less occurs. For me, the dangers of slippery slope, loss of freedom and increased, government enforced social control far outweigh the putative, still controversial, benefits of wearing mask for disease mitigation.

I have learned that life can actually be enhanced by staying home but for the outdoor outings, as encouraged by our County leaders, where social distancing can be maintained.

I missed the skiing, but, during the lockdown I spent more time outdoors, motorcycling, hiking and picnic-ing in Summit County than I ever spent skiing. There's a word of discovery out there...scenery, wild life...that has opened up greatly expanded possibilities for outdoor enjoyment, right here in Summit County. Who knew that virtually no one walks the scenic, wild life infused Rail Trail between Echo and Wanship?

At home, social interaction has actually multiplied thanks to online meeting platforms like Zoom. Average attendance at our morning ROMEO coffee gatherings at Wasatch Bagel was 3 to 6. Now, its 15 to 20 via Zoom, and every participant can enjoy the coffee of his choice.

Add Amazon, home delivery, Netflix, Kaleidescape, and curb side restaurant pick up to this mix and a world of expanded possibilities opens up without having to be in proximity with anyone other than family and close friends.

I realize that, as a retired person, I have more flexibility than many to determine where I will and will not go. My prescription is for me. I'm not proselytizing... I'm just sayin'.

I spent six years living in Asian societies where mask wearing was common. But there, wearing a mask was a personal choice. I have no problem with mask wearing where it is a matter of informed individual choice. But, when mask wearing becomes a matter of government enforced social control and public shaming, that's where I get off the train, particularly as controversy on the benefits, or not, of mask wearing for disease mitigation persists.

But, don't worry about me, mask wearing, skulking shunners, snitches and shamers, I don't plan on being anyplace near you.

The bank of Vernal (now Zions Bank) was built with bricks shipped from Salt Lake City to Vernal in 1916. Bank officials wanted hard-fired bricks for their enduring building. Because Vernal was in Salt Lake City's second postal zone, mailed bricks cost half the amount of freighted bricks. Due to the distance, weight and difficulty of the flood of bricks mailed, postal regulations were changed across the country, and, The Bank of Vernal became known as the "Parcel Post Bank." The Bank of Vernal is on the Register of Utah Historic Places. — at Zions Bank.

Addendum:

Love it!! Do you know the piano part in the Organ Symphony is more difficult than the organ part!! Of course, Saint/Saens was also a very fine pianist! What orchestra were you watching?

I am ready to try the industrial model. The squirrels here at home are getting our mangos faster than I can shoot them, but having shot a few thousand down on the island, I think I about have the iguanas under control.
