Picto Diary - 05, 06 November 2018 - Founders Fund

Above: City view. San Francisco, CA. 05 November 2018.

View from my hotel room window, Stanford Court Hotel, San Francisco, CA. Top of Nob Hill... intersection of Powell and California cable car lines.

Annual trek to Founder's Fund LP Meeting.

Good to be here.

After getting off Target Bank board a few years ago, Founders LP meeting and Hoover retreats are my only forays into the real world. — at Stanford Court San Francisco.

Above: Motorcycles. The Battery. San Francisco, CA. 06 November 2018.

One thing to like about The Bay Area. A vibrant motorcycle culture. Closest thing in US to Europe. Shoulda ridden over here. TIMDT talked me out of it. I flew. No fun.. Missing Aunt Joyce. — at The Battery.

Founder's Fund Limited Partners meeting. The Battery, San Francisco, CA. 06 November 2018.

PRESENTATIONS:

STRIPE. Patrick Collison, CEO
AFFIRM: Max Levchin, CEO
SPACEX: Bret Johnson, CFO
ANDURIL, Palmer Luckey, Founder
RIGUP, Xuan Yong, CEO
CLOUD9, Jack Etienne, CEO
FOUNDER'S FUND, Peter Thiel, Partner

Dominant Theme: Reeeeeely (sic) smart, young billionaires presenting in shorts and flip flops.

Dominant Impression: American entrepreneurial spirit, world domination category, alive and well.

Dominant Moment: Awe and tears witnessing SPACEX progress and aspirations. So proud to be an investor in SPACEX.

Dominant Revelation: RIGUP. Don't believe AI scare. Labor shortage next 25 years oil/energy business.

Dominant Surprise: CLOUD9. League of Legends video game championship 2017 Beijing has more viewers than Super Bowl.

Dominant wake up call: CLOUD9. Average age MLB/NFL/NBA fan 57. Sans change, major league sports dead in 20 years. Those damn millennials!

Dominant Thiel observation. FOUNDERS FUND. Last 15 years, volume and growth before margin. Looking forward, sustaining margin earlier in developmental process gains in importance.

Dominant Thiel observation (2): Worried about indoctrination on US college campuses. Is going to teach a class at Stanford.

Dominant Conclusions: Always Bishop's best day of the year. Brings feelings of hope and excitement about a future that Bishop won't see. Five personal minutes tonight with Peter equal to this year's 30 books read. Good life.
