Win/lose may have worked for a brief period after the civil way, but, within 20 years, those on the "lose" side began to glorify their cause (which was to preserve slavery) while most of those on the "win" side (e.g., their cause was to prevent secession, and not universally anti-slavery) focused on moving forward. Seems unlikely that approach will work completely today. I think we needs a strong third party (more than just the "independents") to right this ship and lead us to working together rather than against each other.
