Picto Diary - 1, 2, 3 March - 2016 - 80 Plus

Today 01 March 2016, (no image) skied with a group that included five 80 plus year olds. A friend of mine, and a good friend of my Dad's, invited me to join the group.

The 80 plus club included a retired CFO of Ford Motor, a retired CEO of Boeing Aerospace, a retired General Counsel for Atlantic Richfield, and a Park City ranch property owner who still enters (at 88) his horses in cutting contests around the west. Also present was a 70 something who runs a major US hotel group.

Five 80 plus skiers! Gives me something to which to aspire!

I skied a few runs today with Ohl.

Ohl and Mwah (sic) were riding up the Silverlode lift together. A third skier sat to our left on the 6 pack chair. He looked like he was in his mid-30's. He was dressed in a ski racing suit. He had slalom skis. Outside his racing suit he wore a black, quilted coat with a "US Ski Team" patch. He was, I figured, part of the Masters racing group, which was having a competition on the mountain today.

Mwah (sic): [to Ohl] "Nice day!"

Ohl: Yes. Beautiful

"Racer": Well, its going to get up to 60 degrees today. Not so good for skiing.

Ohl: Global warming?

"Racer": You guys deniers?

Mwah (sic): No, just confused. None of the predictions made by the warmists 20 years ago have come to pass. Southern ice cap accretes. Glaciers accrete in Patagonia. Satellite data says there is no appreciable increase in temperatures for the last 20 years despite a 35% increase in man made CO2 over the same temperature. I read that in The Economist a year ago. How are we supposed to reconcile dire predictions with the current reality? Call me confused... not, a denier.

"Racer": Are you a climate scientist?

Mwah (sic): No. Are you? Look, I said I didn't know whether man was the chief culprit behind warming temperatures or not. I'm confused.

Ohl: What are you doing yourself to mitigate global warming?

"Racer": I'm a vegetarian. I drive a small car. I ride my bicycle when I can, and I live in a small house. You guys need to look at the science. Satellite data don't show a temperature hiatus.

With that, the lift reached the summit and the racer skied off. A two-fer! A ride up the lift and an unsolicited sermon!

Mwah (sic) note: Notwithstanding the warmer temperatures today, the snow season has been great so far. We are at 230 inches of snowfall against a yearly average of 300 inches, so it is very likely that we will exceed average snow fall this year. More snow is in the forecast for a week from now.
