ON YARD SALES

Spring skiing brings additional risks.

I took a 'yard sale' tumble today. I was going at a pretty good clip... estimate 35 mph... down the lower section of Mid Mountain run to link up with Flatiron run, the ski out to the Bonanza Lift.

I was getting into a crouch to make the straight line run when my right ski slid into a grooming groove. I was thrown to the left and my right ski detached.

Its a spooky feeling to have the momentary awareness between the first sense of the fall and the impact, that, "Buddy, you're going down, and, hey, you're also traveling pretty fast... and there is nothing you can do about it!"

I realized when I had hit the hard snow surface and started sliding that I would have soreness but not serious injury. My left ski detached on impact of the fall... so the skis themselves, both detached, were quite far apart from one another, the left ski further downhill from the right ski.

A couple of up-hill skiers retrieved my skis and poles and brought them to me from at least seventy five yards (the pitch was only about 5 degrees) further up the slope.

Unique run skied earlier: Comstock, Flat Iron, Drift, Payday, Creole. Ever searching for softness on a hard pack AM. I may be the only PCM regulars to have skied this run this year.

THE SINGLES LINE

1. Park City Mountain. You are at the end of very long singles line, stretching beyond the gate, awaiting a slot on a six pack lift. By their banter, talking around you, you note that the man and woman in front of you are married. When the man finally reaches the head of the singles line, he ignores a fivesome and does not take the single slot. He is apparently waiting for a foursome so he and his wife can ride up on the same chair.

YOU:

A. Let it go. Its not the end of the world. A foursome will come by soon enough. People don't like to be preached to.

B. Say something snarky so the two ahead of you can hear, like: "Here we go getting on the lift."

C. Politely note to the man that he let a chair go by and that there's a long line behind you.

D. Other.

2. Deer Valley. You enter the singles line and find that there is only one person ahead of you. He is talking to the female ticket puncher and maze control person. As you get closer, you find that they are friends and talking about personal stuff. Two... three chairs with empty seats go by... the pair continue talking.

YOU:

A. Let it go. The pair probably haven't seen each other for a while. Its nice to see people enjoying one another's company. They'll break up soon enough.

B. Say something snarky to the pair. "is this a lift line or a Starbucks?"

C. Politely, even obsequiously, say something like, "hi guys, and smile."

D. Other.

Now that you know what you would do in each case, what do you think most American skiers would do...by generation.... millennial, x, boomer, geezer etc.
