It is my impression that a great portion of the homeless see themselves as part of a "new culture" living, while civilization crumbles around them, a life of cool, counter-culture, free as the wind, no worries, no ties, no obligations, no stress. A job? God forbid! A home to care for? That's for the hoi-polloi! "Give me land, a little land, and the starry skies above...don't fence me in."
