Picto Diary - 15 to 21 November 2023 - Pinocchio

The way school ought to be. We are always bowled over by the top-level quality of Carden's productions. Roy is center front.

Late season motorcycle ride combined with three mile walk on the Rail Trail. I listen to various podcasts while walking. Recently, I have been listening to Glenn Greenwald's "System Update" podcasts. Greenwald is an avatar for free speech. He sees a double standard when conservatives, who have been strong critics of social media curbing conservative speech, cry out for suppression of anti-Israel speech.

Weekly, free performance of what used to be known as The Mormon Tabernacle Choir, now known as the Choir at Tabernacle Square. Lisa, niece, and TIMDT enjoy.

Glynda Good Witch heads for the stall after a visit to the vet in Salt Lake City. Stomach problems. We drove Mynduveroan out to the stable to join her dad who had picked up the horse in Salt Lake and driven her to the stable.

At first blush, this doesn't make a lot of sense. But, on second look... this doesn't make a lot of sense. OK. The rationale for two of the same bikes was to keep one garaged in Ivins and the other one here in Park City. The reason they're together here is that I brought the V twin up from Ivins for service. I'm going to leave the older bike here for the winter and take the V4 down to Ivins for the winter. Other differences than the engine configuration? The bike on the left has adaptive cruise control and right/left side radar warnings. It's also a smoother, more powerful ride. There are ten thousand miles on the bike on the left and 45 thousand miles on the other, older bike. Each has been recently serviced and there is new rubber on the V4.
Above: Park City Mountain. Kokopelli ski run. Park City, UT. 20 November 2023. (1 5 5)
My first day out for the 2023/2024 season. Image is deceptive in that pictured run, Kokopelli, is the only run open on Canyons side of Park City Mountain. I ski on the Canyons side because there is no requirement to have a parking reservation... as there is on the Resort Center side. Snow is manufactured. Despite the fact that last year at this time there was beaucoup snow on the ground, this year is looking pretty normal. During the twenty-five seasons I have skied at Park City, there have been a half dozen times when there was no real snow by Christmas. If you are a groomed slope skier like I am, though, not to worry. With abundant snow making capacity, both PCMR and Deer Valley keep their respective resorts very skiable. Powder skiers, however, suffer when there is little real snow. Repeat: Early days. Snow in abundance will likely come soon. Today I took five runs. I'll build up, adding one more run a day until I'm skiing 14 to 16 runs daily. Today, after about an hour, parts of the run began to ice up. Also, skier numbers on the single open run started to grow. I took a benign fall towards the bottom of the run while paying too much attention to a young skier looking to collide with me. No biggie. Wasn't going fast.

Two runs open. Home Run off of the Payday lift, and First Time off of the First-Time lift. There is not a lot of ski terrain early season but I'm outdoors and active. I ski early to work out the kinks so as to be ready when the real snow comes!

Addendum:
Thanks Steve,
Very thoughtful piece and worthy of conversation and comment.
Totally agree with your value of Free Speech. Limits, however, as I have offered to you in an earlier exchange - e.g. Can't falsely yell fire in a crowded auditorium.
However, I do not think the analogy holds, nor the justification implied, by the reference to the bombing of Dresden or Nagasaki or Hiroshima. One morally repugnant act by one nation does not justify or rationalize an equally morally repugnant act by another.
And indeed, empathy and heart ache is not a zero-sum game. We can grieve equally for the injured and killed Palestinians as we grieve for the injured, kidnapped and killed Israelis.
As Colonel Walter Kurtz, played by Marlon Brando, said in "Apocalypse Now", "The horror of it all"

Big fan of Apocalypse Now. I have the extended version in my personal collection and watch it regularly.
