THE GILDED AGE

"What is the chief end of man? - to get rich. In what way? - dishonestly if we can, honestly if we must."

Mark Twain, 1871

THE GILDED AGE

What the Hamptons are to today, Newport was to the turn of the 20th century.

Then. The Gilded Age. Civilization's builders? Robber Barrons? Despised by those whose standard of living they raised... and scorned by the Euro elite whose outrageously opulent life style they tried to emulate.

Now? The Age of Mass Deceit. Civilization's narrators? Schemers? Despisers of the basket of deplorables and the poor schmucks clinging to their Bibles and guns. Still sucking up to the corrupt and crumbling Euros.

Not bad eating. Service spotty. One of my sides came cold. Recovered with an extra pour of Malbec... but, smug throughout.

Addendum:

Thank you Steve!

I don’t know that it is necessarily so but in my experience of some decades, small companies that are shadows of the founder may be more likely to exhibit the moral compass of which you speak. As smaller businesses are acquired the original moral compass will likely become confused. Size alone becomes a limiting factor. Is this not evident in the banking industry?

I think that is the whole crux of the matter. If we elect a truly corrupt person like Hillary our whole government will be corrupted since she is organized intelligent has a following of equally dedicated people and a whole bunch of shady characters on her side. I can't imagine morally upright people working for and with her and that will be the end of the good government not overnight but it will surely happen. The left-wing press is now trumpeting that college educated people will not photo for Trump and so people are embarrassed to say that they would vote for him over her I consider him a short term threat and her a long-term threat for precisely the reason stated. By the way prince was a lawyer and knew nothing about banking as he was quick to tell me at dinner I was sitting next to him. He was embarrassed and so defensive he said it after he introduced himself which I found very strange because I wasn't blaming him for the financial catastrophe but he was very sensitive. Thx for greetings.

Hello Steve:

While I do not have much time for non-job related activities these days, I do appreciate your emails. This one particularly hit home as just today I spoke to me friend and CEO of a small bank I invested in many years ago in Pensacola, FL. Turns out they sold out to a LA bank to avoid shutdown and my investment is worth $750 today. Not such a good outcome, especially as I begin to think about next stage. In addition to my 401K and IRA I have two remaining private placements. Both are struggling, one in fashion in NYC an one in recycling due to the price of oil.

I did read The Black Widow – really enjoyed it. Just finishing a book on the Kennedy years (JFK and the Regan Revolution) and will likely dive into the one below at some point during the holidays. I recall Michael Lewis’ The Big Short as well.

Judging from your writing, you are in full adventure mode. So be safe, ride well and I hope to make it back to PC one of these days.

All good points
I recommend, for a rainy day, a matinee of Margin Call followed by The Big Short. And if you can find it Roll Over from an earlier crisis
Try also, for reading, This Time Is Different
