I was the organ accompanist at today's Father's Day service. Two very good speakers. The latter, a 55 something male (didn't know him), talked about how we live in a world of less accountability today. As a result, more and more people look for excuses rather than taking responsibility and solving problems. He urged congregation members to be both physically and spiritually fit as an antidote to moral lassitude. Positive, strong message... well delivered.

Sizeable congregation which I estimated to be two hundred and fifty or so. The recreation hall behind the chapel was open to accommodate the overflow.

Fathers' Day calls to mind the LDS focus on the family as the critical central element of society. I reflected on how popular culture, reinforced by government policy and programs, works to undermine the nuclear family: legal abortion; government aid which discourages fatherhood; inhibition of baby food production and distribution; promotion/grooming for alternative lifestyles. The LDS seem challenged to keep their family model intact as the US government turns up the heat on anti-family messaging.

Addendum:

Dear Steve,
Remember the three-volume set I sent you to read “The Origins of the War of 1914” by Luigi Albertini. At roughly 2,000 pages long, it is not a short read; but the basic conclusion, on the last page of volume three is: the B-team of diplomats were in charge.
Is not today’s scenario creepily similar?
