ENERGY! COAL in abundance here in Emery County. Coal fired electricity is cheap. It doesn't penalize the poor and middle class like costly, inefficient wind or solar power does. Good that Utah hasn't done a Germany or a California and has kept its energy costs down.

UT SR 31. — at Huntington Power Plant.

LSDM FOUR PASS RIDE

Pass #3. Eccles Pass (Huntington Canyon). 9655 feet. UT SR 31.

75 degrees. Nice. Hot as Hades 4000 feet down in the Sanpete valley below.

Powering through the curves on the nimble, throaty, Duc has a way of focusing the mind, crowding out the minutia.

At Fairview, intersection of UT SR 31 and US 89, I leave the four pass ride after three passes.

I head to Ephraim, UT, 20 miles south, where Bud, my grandson, attends the week long Snow College Jazz Workshop.

All of the workshop participants, but for Bud, age 12, are 18 or older. Bud's acceptance at the workshop was contingent on him having a chaperone for the evenings. I booked a room at the Willow Creek Inn in Ephraim. Bud's mother took him to Ephraim last night and stayed the night with him. Grandpa will pick up the slack for the next three nights.

During the days, grandpa looks to doing some exploring of the region on the Duc.

Sand hill cranes in Central Florida are gray colored with a red cap. Otherwise they look the same as Utah Sandhills cranes. They are very plentiful in Florida and not afraid of people; they will often walk down the street taking their sweet old time. You can usually get to within 20 feet of them before they will slowly walk away.
