Picto Diary - 17 to 21 May 2023 - Glinda Goodwich

Raging Provo River runoff. This is something to see after a winter of record snows. There are a dozen turbulent tributaries in this mini delta, most of which are dry for most of the year. The park has boardwalks over many of the tributaries so a park visitor can get a real up-close feel for the unusual and rare high-water phenomenon.

Park City High School Varsity Jazz Band performance.

These kids are so fun to watch and hear. I can't believe there are more than fifty high school music programs in the US which perform at this level.

Max Headroom. Battle of the Bands. Caleb Chapman Soundhouse.

Such energy in this performance. Oh, did I mention? Caleb Chapman is a genius.

TIMDT and Mwah (sic) entered the restaurant about 8:15 AM to have breakfast. After thirty minutes of waiting for our food, the following happened:

Mwah (sic): TIMDT, we should ask the waitress where our food is.

TIMDT: I agree but be nice.

Mwah (sic): To waitress. "We've been waiting thirty minutes for our food." (TIMDT says my statement was neither obsequious or nasty. "It was neutral," she said. I have to be careful on this as poor TIMDT has lived our entire married life in constant fear that I will embarrass her somehow in public.

Waitress: I don't know where your food is. (Pause) You can go ask the cook if you'd like to.

Mwah (sic): Surprised look at waitress. She walks away. After putting a five-dollar bill on the table for the coffee, so do we, with TiMDT's strong, affirmative agreement.

Comment: Though it is not on my list of top 20 Utah restaurants, Bishop's Top 20 Utah Eateries | Stephen DeWitt Taylor I go to Chick's for breakfast three or four times a year. They do a fabulous crispy bacon. The regular waitresses there have always been very friendly and positive. I have tipped these women generously for their good service. I didn't recognize the waitresses who served us today. I know we don't always see ourselves as other people see us, but TIMDT affirms that I wasn't rude in asking about our long-awaited order. The waitress' impertinent response was incomprehensible. Even had I been a jerk, wouldn't it have been in her interest to say, "sorry sir, I'll check" and report back, thus, insuring the receipt of a gratuity? OK. OK. This is a first world issue. No big deal. But one is tempted to make generalizations about increasing coarseness in our society or about the difficulty in finding new employees and training them in the whys and wherefores of customer service. Sadly, because of this experience, I'll have to strike Chick's, as a restaurant destination, off my list.

Hi Banker Steve:

Seen and used a lot of panniers and saddle bags in my 1,000,000 + miles and six rides around the world, but never a long set like the white ones on that H-D: Dr. G says, "Simply amazing."
