Picto Diary - 20, 21 November 2018 - Grandparents' Day

Above: Mynduveroan, Granny (TIMDT), and Bishop. Grandparents' Day. Rowland Hall School. 20 November 2018.

Above: Bishop. Liberty Park. Salt Lake City, UT 20 November 2018.

Bishop goes for a walk in the park... literally.

Above: Granny (TIMDT) and Bud. Rowland Hall Middle School. Grandparents' Day. 20 November 2018.

Bud: [Read's aloud from current novel].

Grandpa: When did you memorize that?

Bud: What are you talking about, Grandpa?

Grandpa: We'll you haven't learned to read, yet, have you?

Bud: (Smiling)… Oh Grandpa... don't be ridiculous.

At Grandpa's left, Bud's classmate "P" looks bewildered after listening to the above exchange. Bud's teacher, Ms. X, having heard the exchange, looks on anxiously from a short way off.

Out and about on the Duc.

Image taken while astride the Duc.

10X Zoom on the Galaxy 9 Note. Guessing animal was at least 150 yards from where I was up on the road. I love these winter, pre snow, colors and scenes. A time of transition... neither fall nor winter... "the twilight zone."

Out and about on the Duc.

Bike stopped, facing and heading north, at small road side information sign:

"Hastings Cutoff - Hog's Back. We resumed our journey up the small stream on Reid's [Reed's] route sending in advance of the wagons a small company to make the road passable. We traveled about another six miles, and crossing the ridge (Hogsback) began to descend another ravine.

Orson Pratt, July 16, 1847"

30 mile segment UT SR 65 all alone. No, as in zero, oncoming vehicles for the entire distance.

Empty land....alone,...eerie...stark...cold...beautiful.

Under snow on Thanksgiving, two days away, if current forecasts hold.

Note: In the note above, Orson Pratt's diary refers to "Reid's [Reed's] group." This refers to the ill fated Donner Reed Party which passed the point in the image in August 1846, just over a year earlier.

Above: Instrumentation. Duc. 20 November 2018.

Out and about on the Duc.

Addictive Desmo purr and roll on, cornering, accelerating surge, pre snow. Clears Duc's pipes. Clears Bishop's head.

Email Introduction

Email intro I did today (21 November 2018)... it made me realize how much motorcycling has enhanced my life by enabling me to meet and hang out with such interesting people

Dave: Adventure rider. BMW F800GS with Hideneau tires, rigged to go just about anywhere. Has ridden across Russia and throughout South America. Lawyer (may be retired) who was attorney for Burning Man Festival during its first few years. Dave and I met doing Dr. G's (erstwhile Burning Man acolyte) Big Dog ride over the years.

Bohemian: San Francisco, Bohemian Club, architect moved to Reno four or five years back. Rides in the California/Euro style... high performance, sport, sport touring. Rides ably, as though he's had plenty of track experience. Bohemian and I rode in Bhutan and India together ten or so years ago and have stayed in touch via email forums.

You two ought to at least meet for coffee.

Bishop

PS. Dr. G cc'd. Published author. Native American (Crow), Quaker, (off of which platform he builds wonderful and authentic self imagery). Lives half the year with his wife in Thailand. World Motorcycle Adventurer, says his business card... has ridden around world six times... writes the adventure column for SF based "Citibike," a publication with which Bohemian is no doubt familiar. Lives the other half the year between Crow Agency, near Billings, Montana and Denver, CO. Wonderful writer. Like all of us, getting long in the tooth and full of stories. Tolerates inauthentic, wannabes like me as part of his riding community.

Stephen D. Taylor was eating dinner with my love at Harbor Seafood & Steak Co. 21 November 2018 · Salt Lake City.

First time.
NE clam chowder. Great!
Halibut. OK+. 2500 miles from Homer, quand meme.
Grilled cauliflower and broccoli. Good. Ample.
Chutney garnish and pistachios. Nice.
Malbec (I don't pair) acceptable.
Service at par.
Pricey.
No table cloth (at these prices)?
Laminated table surface?
Seating uncomfortably squeezed in Euro bistro style.
Whisper, or you'll be heard. Ie. Not for private business meetings?
Located well enough for us, close to the mouth of Parley's Canyon.
But, food not good enough to overcome setting negatives and surprisingly high price level.
C+
Return, if we're in the area and reeeeeely hungry.

Addendum:

Hi Steve and Margaret,
Great pictures thanks for sharing and Merry Christmas your tree looks great.
