Sheldon, Parker and Bud present Abbas Ibn al Firnis. First glider flight attempt. 852 Ad. Granada, Spain. Firnis did not have a successful flight, but, he passed on many important learnings to be incorporated in future flight tests.... such as, next time, the apparatus needs a tail fin.

The exhibits were great.

I listened to four presentations...Firnis, one on currency, one on medical system, and one on courtyard gardens and waterworks. The kids all described their exhibits with knowledge and poise.

On this latter (gardens and waterworks) I was reminded of our visit to The Alhambra Palace, in Granada, Spain in September 2018. Here, in the Court of the Lions, the waterworks were intricate and efficient as stone sluices moved the water from room, to fountain, to room. The Moors had come from the arid Middle East to conquer Spain. Water was important to them. The Rowland Hall seventh grade girl, using her representation of a moorish garden, was very effective in conveying the importance of, and reverential treatment of water during the Golden Age of Islam.

Give the Muslims credit for staying true to their cultural beliefs even in to the modern era.

A cultural contest, of sorts, between the West and Islam has been ongoing since Charles Martel rebuffed Saladin at the gates of Tours in 732 AD. Back then, Muslims were ascendant, enlightened and compassionate rulers of Dark Ages southern Europe until "the Moor's last sigh" at the Alhambra, in Granada, in 1492.

Now, once again, we see a resurgent Islam...the rise of another GOLDEN AGE?
