NOTE; NO ENTRY FOR 22 AUGUST 2018

Geezer bull not long for this world. DNR issues 6 old bull hunting permits annually, average cost $1500.00. Hunting fees help pay park overheads.

Antelope Island buffalo herd kept around 500. Not enough grass for more buffalo. Since there are 200 calves born annually, culling needs to be done. 100 calves are given away. Cows and young bulls are rounded up annually and sold. 6 geezer bulls, like one shown in image with Duc, are shot by permit.

Ratio of 1 bull to three cows maintained in culling process at Antelope Island State Park. Commercial herds have ratio of one bull for 12 cows.

Old bulls are irascible, nasty, and not desired in the herd by the other buffalo. That's why they are seen solitary, as in this image.

DNR issues two deer buck hunting permits and two mountain goat permits annually.

The deer and mountain goat permits are auctioned. One of this year's buck permits was auctioned off for $389 thousand dollars!!! Huh! Nope, that's right! $389K!

No deer hunting has been allowed in Antelope Island until three years ago. The herd built up to some 200 individuals, with an overabundance of males, too many to be sustained, along with the buffalo, on the grassy island.

With no buck hunting having taken place for years on the island, many of the bucks grew to hyper trophy size. Shooting a trophy buck, with only one of two permits, in a place as unusual as Antelope Island, commands a big premium.

The two mountain goat permits were auctioned off for $85 thousand each!
