Picto Diary - 23, 24 April 2016 - Marfa

On the road... On the Duc...Monument Valley, UT.

Good morning. 23 April 2016

Mr. Z3 story:

And, remember the time when the B1b bomber buzzed us only 1000 feet overhead when we were dirt riding the remote Pilot Range in Eastern NV?

Memory from today's ride, south across the Navajo Indian Reservation to Alpine... then a beautiful road (US 184) southeast to Silver City, NM was.... WIND. 40 mile an hour gusts coming from the west as we road south.

On the road... on the Duc.... Silver City, NM.

Mr. Z3, Elk and fish tank. Diane's Restaurant. Silver City, NM. 23 April 2016.

Monument Valley to Silver City. US 163, US 160, US 191, US 180. 410 miles.

1 pm rendezvous with Elk, riding Honda ST 1200, from Norwood, CO, in Sanders, AZ.

The face of Jesus in the mural in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City is that of Elk, who modeled for the painting.

On the road... On the Duc.... Van Horne, TX. 24 April 2016.

Elk readies for the 75 mile ride south on US 90 to Marfa, after lunch at Chuy's, Van Horne, TX.

Left to right. My Duc, Elk's Honda ST, and Mr. Z 3's beemer GT.

Chuy's, a Mexican restaurant, made a big point of touting its most famous customer. John Madden. Madden was a regular customer at Chuy's, Van Horne, TX, as his Madden Cruiser regularly plied I-10 as it led him to one of his Sunday NFL broadcasts or another.

Today's ride: US 84 south from Silver City to I-10. I-10 through Las Cruces, NM and El Paso, TX to Van Horne, TX. US 90 south from Van Horne to Marfa. Total distance, 350 miles.

On the road...On the Duc... Marfa , TX. 24 April 2016.

The Bishop observes the Presedio County Courthouse, Marfa, TX.

Arty, farty town Marfa, in the middle if nowhere in west Texas, has a become somewhat of a cult destination visit. 7 or 8 years ago, I motorcycled through Marfa on the way to Big Bend National Park sans knowing of its appeal.

I always wanted to come back and check Marfa out... and her I am.

Funky...Art deco...lots of tattooed millenials seeming to enjoy themselves

Cormack McArthy's "No Country for Old Men," and "Giant," with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, were filmed in Marfa.

On the road... On the Duc. Marfa TX. 24 April 2016.

John , guest at Hotlel Paisano, shows Mr. Z3 his new Charger Hellcat. 4 door. 700 HP. Lists for 70 grand, but additional premium to get one of the 55 copies made in 2015 can be as high as $100K.
Hellcat was best art we saw in Marfa!

John, a retired oil wild catter, had just raced the Hellcat in a local highway timed event.

Love it. Geezers gone wild. Only in America.

On the road... On the Duc. Marfa, TX. 24 April 2016.

Mr. Z 3, The Bishop, and Elk. El Paisano Hotel, Marfa, TX.

Too tired to go see the Marfa Lights. But, we're assured they're the real deal.

Addendum:

Little four-day 1800 mile ride from San Angelo to Kaplan volcano overnight in Taos overnight in Durango down through Arizona in the ditch at a canyon and back to San Angelo Texas. Don't have a selfie stick yet. I hope I can catch Steve in between his rides are on the road later in May. Steve your pic though diary is fabulous kind a like a blog I think. Keep racking up the miles and having a good time and doing the good work.

Yes... Lets look for a rendezvous. Hindsight, we might have been able to connect on this trip since we were covering much of the same geography. Be sure to let me know when you're coming this way.
