Picto Diary - 24, 25 August 2018 - Busker Fest

Above: Bud busks for bucks. Salt Lake City, UT. 24 August 2018.

1st annual Busker Fest. His Mom entered him.... wisely as it turns out. He played on the corner of Main Street and 1st South, where the Eccles Center for Performing Arts is located. He attracted quite a bit of interest... and some tips. Really good experience!

Because this is the first year for the Busker Fest (BF), BF also paid the performers invited to participate. Bud's learning from this experience, and from his regular gigs at Park Silly Market, that you can make money banging drums.

Side note. TIMDT and Mwah (sic) were the adults supervising Bud. He had been allocated his space by the organizers and provided with a sign to indicate that he was part of Busker Fest.

TIMDT and Mwah observed the performance through the wall to ceiling windows of Eccles Center lounge while seated on comfy sofas. Occasionally one of us would go out to provide Bud with motivational support. And, occasionally Bud would come into the lounge for a break and a sip of water.

One of the times when I happened to be outside watching the performance, a Salt Lake City policeman came up.

Policeman: Do you know this boy?

Mwah (sic): He's my grandson.

Policeman: Does he have permission to play here?

Mwah (sic): Yes. He's part of the Busker Fest, the main body of which is around the corner on Regent Street. Check out that promotional sign next to him.

Policeman: That's fine. Its just that someone called us to report that there was an unsupervised minor performing on this corner. Everything looks good. Have fun!

Was the caller a busy body (Bishop) or doing a good turn (TIMDT)?

As we walked amidst the busker performances, it was clear that Bud was the youngest entry... and, the only bucket drummer.

"These are my people! Fellow buskers! Its good to be 'home!'

Bud, TIMDT and Mwah (sic) dined at Martine, just around the corner, after the performance. Martine was recommended by Dean Hottle, Chef and Owner of Snake Creek Grill, in Heber City, UT. Dean says its one of the places he frequently goes to when he dines in SLC.

We loved Martine. I had airline chicken over salad. TIMDT had trout. Bud ordered a burger. On hearing we came with Dean's recommendation, they through in a few freebies.... amuse bouche and crudites.

New development near Park City Mountain. If you're not growing, you're shrinking. But, why this, and not the Treasure Hill Development, just up the road...i.e. on the same street?

Above: TIMDT buys peaches at roadside, US 89. Perry, UT. 25 August 2018.

Peter Piper's previously picked Perry peaches.

Peaches picked today from trees just behind in the image. TIMDT bought half bushel. Said we'd give some to the kids.

A few minutes earlier we stopped for a 5:00 PM bite at Perry's Maddox, Utah's most famous, iconic ...and successful restaurant. Best deplorable food in Utah, by far. No reservations accepted.

The line to check in with the maître 'd was 50 people long. Thereafter one hour wait. Parking lot full with at least 200 cars.

Sadly, we had to give Maddox a miss. Besides, Bishop don't wait in no line (sic).

Best time to get into Maddox is 3:00 PM on a week day.

Unless you are prepared to wait a long time, don't go to Maddox anytime on Saturday. Closed Sunday.

Peach purchase stop and failed attempt at Maddox was part of a sightseeing loop we took today that included lunch at Don Pedro's, Evanston, WY, a raspberry milkshake at Garden City, UT (Bear Lake), a stop at Beaver Mountain Ski resort, and a walk around the Utah State University campus, Logan, UT.

Addendum:

Looks good.

One correction. There are no Mountain Goats on Antelope Island.

" Antelope Island is home to free-ranging bison, mule deer, bighorn sheep, pronghorn (antelope), "

Bighorn Sheep.

Thanks for correction. The $85K tags are for the bighorn sheep, not mountain goats. Wrong for me to conflate the two!

Bishop,

Please bring me back a peach pie and freeze it for me.

Park Avenue,
New York, NY

If we get up there [Maddox] again, we'll get one! Not a bad thing to covet, by the way!

You always find some great places to eat [Maddox] and many of them have an interesting history. How long will these types of places continue in existence. The place in your photo obviously has the customer base to survive. Deplorable food is decent fun to eat food as compared to the junk many of the indoctrinated snowflakes consume.

The POPE,
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Other Utah iconic , deplorable food, must goes:

Maddox, Perry, UT (Maddox, compared to the others, is in a class by itself).
Chics Cafe, Heber City, UT
Ray's Tavern, Green River, UT
Mom's Cafe, Salina, UT
Shooting Star Saloon, Huntsville, UT

List is not dispositive. Would love to hear about other qualifiers.

Billings Hill Climb Reportage – July 2018 – Copyright Free
By
Saul Bishop

One hundred years of motorcyclists attempting to top “The Hill,” and being the oldest continuous motorcycle racing event in the world, drew six time global motorcycle circumnavigator and adventurer Dr. Gregory Frazier like a siren calling to a ship loaded to the gunnels with frenzied libido primed men to the islands of a South Sea island, or in July, 2018, Frazier to the 100th running of the Billings Hill Climb.

Frazier, known as “Dr. G,” assembled a global Cyber and Physical Pit Crew to help him attack the 600 foot high hill that started at 45 degrees and at the top was 90 degrees. To add to the challenge, Dr. G, a Native American, spent 18 hours assembling the hill climb motorcycle and eventually rolled out his 1936 fire breathing Indian Sport Scout race bike, at 82 years–old and considered a museum quality motorcycle, and as one scribe scribbled, “Was an old Indian on an old Indian.”

Results were:

Both Indians started race day well amped. Frazier admitted to not listening to the purported real biker’s “looking for adventure” anthem, BORN TO BE WILD,” for amperage, instead choosing Jimi Hendrix’s “PURPLE HAZE” at bone jamming and jimmies jumping full volume.

Pit Crew members, buzzing like bumble bees around the pits in their yellow and black BOOM BOOM INDIAN RACING T-shirts were filmed, interviewed and treated to free swills and thrills. The crew included “Deadhorse” from South Carolina, “Tonto” and wife “Umbrella Girl” from Kansas City, “Banker (aka “Bishop”) Steve” from Utah, and “Porta Potty” from California.

A combination of Pit Crew temerity, strong right legs for kick starting the Indian Motorcycle, Devine Intervention, multi-denominational wishful prayers, and a Godly amount of good joss resulted in Dr. G and the Indian returning home unscathed with not only a rewarded T-shirt but a prized event trophy.

Dr. G, still under an imposed social media embargo and well orchestrated no-nonsense paparazzi avoidance program, was limited to the following quote he had purloined from the movie EASY RIDER: “This ain’t no pork chop adventure, this is U.S. Prime! Nik-Nik-Nik-f-f-f Indians!”

The famed 1936 Indian Motorcycle that had been campaigned at Daytona, Pikes Peak, Sturgis, numerous road races and 1940’sTT tracks has now moved to the “For Sale” category. However, there was wafting in the Montana winds a rumor that both Indians may return for another adventurous run at topping The Hill in 2019.

Neighbor kids did well on their fossil hunt today. [Fossil Butte National Monument]

Guzzi,
Park City, UT

Note: There are sections of the Green River formation near Fossil Butte National Monument where fossil seekers are authorized to look for fossils. Neighbor kids did not purloin!

This is a really cool thing to do... to unearth with your own hands the remnants of a fish that lived thirty million years ago.

I really enjoyed my visit to Fossil Butte National Monument last week!
