Hi Steve,

You wrote:

"Abundance of caution. You can see that the last tire I rode 5000 miles. There might have been another 500 miles on the tire. I tend to take long trips. I wouldn't want to do a 2000 mile round trip on a tire with 3500 miles... so, I sometimes change the tire before it is really needed. I have had new tires mounted in distant locations... but, its time consuming... pain in the neck. Better to have a tire that will last out the trip."

I see guys, guys with big $'s, trying to squeeze the last 500 -1,000 miles out of a tire. Last month I spent two hours changing an expensive rear tire that had at least 1,000 miles left, but I had a 1,200 -1,300 mile trip to Montana planned, most at highway speeds and fully loaded. I can do a roadside tube change or patch, but try not to. As my Harley owner/neighbor watched me toss what he called a "perfectly good looking tire" into the dumpster, I said, "Been there, done that, got the T-shirt and learned that it's true: an ounce of prevention is worth the pound of cure."

I'll Cheap Charlie a tire on my car, go the extra miles, but do so knowing I am carrying a spare, tools and a high lift jack if needed. Not so on a motorcycle.

After over a million miles on motorbikes I've garnered plenty of tire tales - most memorable due to the shitty situation I experienced (like a flat front tire on I-25 in Wyoming, that when I got the old tube out discovered the previous owner(s) had patched it three times).

Good idea - "abundance of caution."

PS: Motorbike in pic is "resting" in BOB's BMW Museum, where I donated it to - lot's of tire tales on that tired R80G/S :-)
